Fire Safety Today is your online safety resource.
Our mission is to help you prevent fire and other tragedies from striking your home. If the unexpected does happen, we strive to give you the tools to minimize damage and get you and your family out of your house safely. Deadly fires happen. Often, if the occupants would have had a fire extinguisher, smoke alarm or even an escape ladder, tragedy could have been averted.
Although they mostly hang unused on your wall, fire extinguishers are the first line of defense against fire. Knowing how to use this vital piece of safety equipment can mean the difference between minor damage and a total catastrophe in your home. Fire Safety Today has articles on the proper use of fire extinguishers, their maintenance and which types work best on different classes of fire.
Smoke detectors are critical pieces of safety equipment for your home. Just recently six people in Chicago, including several children, were killed in a fire. The tragic fact is that there were no working smoke detectors within the apartment where the victims lived - another tragedy that could have been averted by having properly installed, working smoke detectors.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is another serious threat to your family. It is a colorless odorless gas that is produced as a byproduct of combustion. Many municipalities now require that Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors be installed in homes and offices.
All homes should have a plan of escape and practice the plan. Escape plans and drills are critical especially in multi-level homes. The availability of a fire escape ladder is crucial to ensure evacuation if the main second or third floor escape route is in the path of fire.
