With fire officials making their rounds of inspections at Brownsville schools one thing is apparent: At least half of district schools are failing.
While many of the infractions can be easily remedied, there are also cases of persistent neglect, mis-management and disorganization, according to the Brownsville Fire Department.
At one school, inspectors found exit doors chained, and fire safety doors — which are supposed to seal off smoke from students in case of a fire — forced open.
As of last week, fire inspectors had completed spot inspections at 41 Brownsville Independent School District schools, 21 of which failed. Schools which failed inspections and even schools that passed had many of the same problems, includ-ing annual equipment inspections that were out of date, incomplete or failing alarm systems, kitchen fire suppression systems or fixed pipe systems [...]
