A Good Example of the Value of Smoke Detectors

At a recent house fire, the resident explained how a recently installed smoke detector alerted occupants of a fire in their home. The homeowner was having new windows installed and along with that there was the required inspection of the installation by a member of the Eden Prairie Building Department Inspection staff. During the inspection it was noted that the home needed to update the location of smoke detectors so that each sleeping area had one.
Fast forward a few months and that very same new detector alerted the home's occupants that the lightning strike that had hit the home had caused a fire to erupt in the attic space. Once alerted the homeowners exited the house safely and called 911. Just when it seemed that structure fires in Eden Prairie had become a thing of the past, the odds have caught up with us the past 10 days with four house fires. The first two fires, August 16th and again on the 18th were the result of preventable actions taking place. One fire was due to the sparks from a welding torch and the other from a light left on in a storage area too close to combustible materials.
Fires three and four came in today within just two minutes of one another, both due to lightening strikes. Both of these fires would fall under the category of acts of nature and not really too preventable.
