Fire inspectors say they can`t keep up with long list of overdue inspections

Saint Joseph MO:

There are plenty of businesses and even apartment buildings throughout Saint Joseph that are overdue for a fire inspection. Fire inspectors said the list is so long they just can`t keep up.  A St. Joseph man doesn`t want to be identified as he describes the condition of his apartment complex.
He said he believes the whole complex could use a safety check. Especially after a neighbor`s oven caught fire in the complex with no working fire extinguisher in sight.

According to St. Joseph fire inspectors the list is long for apartment complexes and even businesses that are overdue for a fire inspection. Right now there are five drawers full of them.

"It`s more than just doing inspections," Jason Ziph, fire inspector, said. "When someone has a fire we also have to do something that`s called a cause and origin investigation."

Inspectors said to manage they try to prioritize, putting schools near the top of the list.

"Schools are one of our target hazards," Beattie said. "We`ve got other target hazards for the ISO`s, such as factors, and pertinent buildings in town."

Still their workload just doesn`t end. The landlord of the unidentified tenant`s apartment complex admits there may be some fire extinguishers that need to be replaced.

However, he said there have been problems fire extinguisher thefts in the past. Also they are working on putting all fire extinguishers in cases in every hallway. He said also the oven that caught fire has been replaced.
