Fire Safety Equipment Triggers Port Terrorism Scare

MIAMI - The Port of Miami had its second false terrorism alarm in two days Monday when a package waiting to be loaded onto a cruise ship tested positive six consecutive times for plastic explosive. Authorities later found it was harmless.

A Miami-Dade County police bomb squad destroyed the box and then checked it, said Zach Mann, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman. The box held fire sprinkler parts, which contained a substance that "closely resembles" the military-grade explosive known as C4, police spokesman Bobby Williams said

Fire Safety and life safety are crucial elements for our country’s port terminals and it’s imperative that the integrity of a fire safety program not be compromised.  Unfortunately, Monday’s incident in Miami is not the first time fire safety equipment has been either suspected or used in terror activities.

Over the past 20 months there have been over fifty incidents in which fire extinguishers have been tampered and converted into improvised explosive devices (IEDs) resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries.  Because of this, the Department of Homeland Security recognizes a technology to continually electronically monitor a facility’s fire extinguisher inventory.
