At a recent house fire, the resident explained how a recently installed smoke detector alerted occupants of a fire in their home. The homeowner was having new windows installed and along with that there was the required inspection of the installation by a member of the Eden Prairie Building Department Inspection staff. During the inspection it was noted that the home needed to update the location of smoke detectors so that each sleeping area had one.
Fast forward a few months and that very same new detector alerted the home's occupants that the lightning strike that had hit the home had caused a fire to erupt in the attic space. Once alerted the homeowners exited the house safely and called 911.
